Epic!

It’s been pretty exciting around here!

OK, in the interest of getting this posted and on to getting ready for a meeting, and 3 events (yes THREE back to back big events and then a trip out of town) I am going to get to the point of this post. Here are the highlights:

Don received a challenge coin with his art on it!

It was our honor to be invited and attend the Station Cape Disappointment “change of command” ceremony. We have been to several and we always love it! Don’s been commissioned to do paintings for previous commander gifts. His art is also at the station and now on the sign too. (More about that later) it was however, the first time that we were able to take our son Joe with us.

The challenge coin had been a project started and then 2020 happened; so I didn’t think the project had been able to go through. In fact, I was worried that Don was going to be disappointed…

But after the ceremony, we were going to say our goodbyes to the very awesome, Lt.Jessica Shafer and she gave Don the coin, via handshake. Luckily, my sons had just recently bought me a new iphone and I was able to whip it up and snap a quick pic capturing the moment. Don didn’t let go of Jess’ hand until we got a picture and then we took a few more of course!

After that, we were able to tour the station and Cape D light. We even got to see inside the area where the Coasties watch the waterway. It was a beautiful day. On the way out, we took some pics of Don by the sign. You can see more pics on the Don Nisbett Facebook page and also the Ilwaco Exposed Facebook page.

We hear our local Coast Guard Auxiliary helped install the new signage! It looks great of course!

It is quite an honor to receive the challenge coin; especially from such a great woman! (The first female commander of Cape D) We enjoyed getting to know Jess a little over her time here and wish we could keep her in our community! But her next stop is the White House. Makes me feel a little better knowing someone like that is moving on and moving up. Don was so happy that his blood sugar dropped significantly! And that’s a good thing. I just know it was the pure joy!

Don told me later that it is the 3rd challenge coin Don has received. I know one was from our son, David, who’s in the Navy. The other coin is the former challenge coin from Cape D. I think he said he was given it by a previous commander, but I’ll have to ask again.

Our son Joe stated that he wanted to be bequeathed the coin in our will and Don and I agreed that it should be his. He was there when Don received it and has always been part of our business.
